Maria Lowe became the licensee of The Gardeners Arms on the 6th August 1878, following the death of her husband Samuel on 27th July 1878, aged 70. Maria Lowe had been born in 1808, in Middlesex, London and was 71, when she took over the running of the pub. Sadly, another landlady forced to take over the running of a city centre watering hole, after losing her husband.
Samuel Lowe had taken the tenure of the lease at the pub on 2nd April 1878, following Maria Cooper, who's husband Thomas Cooper, had died in February 1874. Thomas had been at the pub since 16th October 1867.
Maria Lowe is registered on the 1881 Census return aged 72(?) and as 'Licensed Victuallar', living at The Gardeners Arms, TimberHill.
Maria, died some time before on 30th September 1881, when the licence passed onto William Walker Cooper .Her death is registerd as being aged 75
